Vietnam, here we come!!!

I am writing this while doing some last minute packing. It’s my first time taking the bus from KL Central to LCCT and I’m not sure how long it is going to take. There’s also a departing ‘Lunch’ with family members so that they get to see me one last time? It’s not like I’m gonna go missing in action after this trip!! What to do, grandmothers are grandmothers. My whole morning was filled with phone ringing.. One after another.. From relatives, to wish me good luck and to ‘remind’ me of all sorts of dangers such as ‘Do Not help any old person take their bags. There' may be drugs in it.’ and the classic one ‘Don’t go looking for prostitutes.. Even if you do, USE a CONDOM!!’.

Back to the trip before I expose any more information on myself. Students of Taylor’s University College, Law School will be meeting up at LCCT at about 3.00 pm for a short briefing session before we board the airplane. The eleven of us will be accompanied by students from Taylor’s Business School and the American Degree Program who will be there on their own business trip to enhance their ‘business’ skills.

Here’s some comments made by some of our students about the trip to Vietnam:

This is a wonderful event organised by our university. It does add a considerable amount of weight to our CV’s next time.

Justin Dominic Wong, Year 1 LLB Student

No regrets joining Taylor’s Law School. Our program Director gives as much emphasis on first hand experience as she does in our academic results. Most importantly, this kind of experience is not one which we can get anytime, anywhere.

Elisa, Year 1 LLB Student

Firstly, I must thank Taylor’s University College for this wonderful experience. I would also like to convey my gratitude to the LAWASIA Committee for choosing Taylor’s as the Host University for the 2008 LAWASIA Moot Competition. Without you, we would not be going off to Vietnam and will be boringly flipping through law textbooks during the weekend.

Sara Lau, Year 1 LLB Student

Again, I humbly ask you to stay tune for more interesting, mouth-watering updates.

Neptune Loh

Taylor’s University Student Feedbacks

Generally speaking, I believe that the Lawasia moot was an amazing experience. I must say that we were very privileged in that we were given an opportunity to be a part of the workings of a competition that is held on an international arena. We were exposed to the standard that is expected of an interantional mooter and the reality of advocacy as the judges of the competition which were, for the most part, actual judges from different countries. On a personal level, this competition was a great chance for us, first year law students, to bond and spend time with one another. Even so, to be able to acquaint and work with the second year law students. Undeniably the three days involved alot of work and everybody was exhausted. However, I would say it was worth it as it was an experience and an opportunity that is invaluable.

Nicholas Lai, Year 1 Law Student

Lawasia was a great eye-opener for me, especially being a first year student in the law programme. It was a great opportunity to interact with many leading professionals in the field and to witness first-hand the many areas of law that is available. Alternatively it was a great experience to observe the mooting competition that was held and to be apart of the preparation behind it.

Mohammed, Year 1 Law Student

LawAsia was fun. Especially with the conference, u get to hear influential ppl talk about important issues and stuff. The moots were awesome in the sense that we could experience first-hand the nastiness of the judges and made us realise just how tenacious u must be to make it.

Ikram, Year 1 Law Student

The role of timekeeper in your average moot might seem, at a glance, to be a small, boring one; but i can safely say that my experience as a timekeeper in the LAWASIA international moots was an eye-opening experience. For one, I had to stay wide awake for the entire duration of 2 hours- give or take; and two, I had to keep the time to its precise minutes and seconds. Arduous, you may think, but what I witnessed from behind the desk across from the participants' was nothing short of extraordinary.

Shariza Abdul, Year 2 Student

I remember the day when I was still struggling while thinking of which University to apply to for my Law studies. Looking back, I am glad that I made the right decision to join Taylor's Law School. The experiences which I have gained here is something which no other law school can offer. Many thanks to the Bar Council as well for making the right decision when choosing our prestigous institution as a partner in the LAWASIA International Mooting Competition. My pathway to becoming a lawyer has been a truely enlightening one.

Wei Jeat, Year 2 Law Student

Report

TAYLOR’S HOST 3RD LAWASIA INTERNATIONAL MOOT COMPETITION

Students of Taylor’s Law School had the chance of a lifetime to host the national and international rounds of the 3rd LAWASIA Moot Competition, a prestigious international event committed to raising the standards of law practice across Asia Pacific, from 29 Oct to 1 Nov 2008. Hosted for the first time in Malaysia, nine teams from six countries, including one from Taylor’s, vied for the championship international title.

From managing logistics to volunteering at the conference, the organizing committee comprising Year 1 and Year 2 students took it all in their stride to organise what was deemed the best LAWASIA Moot competition ever held to-date. All staff and students also spent 3 days at KLCC helping with the competition and participating in the conference.

Taylor’s first runner-ups in the National Rounds, Tracy Wong, Shaun Kang and Lee Mei Cheing, were invited by LAWASIA to participate in the international event in KL. The flight expenses for Tracy and Mei Cheing from the University of Reading were borne by Taylor’s University College. This underscores the commitment of Taylor’s Law School to mooting and to providing opportunities for their students to participate in international competitions.

The team’s sheer determination and hard work did not go unrecognized. Mr Glenn Ferguson, President of LAWASIA and Mr Raphael Tay, Chairman of LAWASIA congratulated the team for a job well done and cited the competition as an ’outstanding event’ in their speeches during the Gala Dinner for 800 guests which included the newly appointed Chief Justice of Malaysia, judges, lawyers and academics from 32 countries.

Ms Rajeswari Kanniah, Programme Director of Taylor’s Law School shares, “By hosting this competition, our students gained invaluable exposure and they now know how to handle international events successfully. Additionally, the team that represented Taylor’s in the competition faced some of the best law schools in the world and they are now aware of their strengths and weaknesses.”

It is undeniable that this amazing experience for the students has helped to cement greater confidence, teamwork, leadership skills and communication skills and made them better lawyers of the future.
