Esther Wee, Year 1 LLB

Often at the age of 19, people tend to ask me what course I am studying. When I answer “Oh, I study Law,” the typical response would be “Wow, is it hard?” Well to me, it will be hard if you are not going to study, but once you study and grasp the concept, it would be interesting to be able to apply the law and solve a problem given.
I’ve recently entered my Year 2 and so far, the journey has been exciting. I’ve learn how to think outside the box. The best part about law is that there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on how you argue an issue and that is what makes law interesting. Besides, studying law seems very real and useful to me as I can apply what I learn into day to day situations concerning the law. A good example is when we study criminal law, our lecturer would pick out popular ongoing criminal cases and we would discuss them in class as he ask for our opinion on the case.
Other than sharpening my thinking skills, I enjoyed the co-curricular activities which we as law students get to participate in. During our Year 1, the lecturers would organize trips down to the national courts, the Parliament and the Attorney-General’s Chambers. It was really an experience for me not only because it was a time of bonding between the classmates but we were able to witness a real court case and a Parliament in session. Basically, it brings what we have learnt to live and I enjoyed that the most. Furthermore, we each got the opportunity to join moot competitions and experience hands on researching and preparing our case to argue before the judges. It was both fun and thrilling.
Life as a law student is not as boring and mundane as most of the people think it is. Yes, there is a lot of reading to be done but if one prioritise his time well, it shouldn’t be any problem. It is not always study and no play. We do have our dose of social fun as well as we are just like any other regular University student.
All in all, I never regretted studying law because it has thus far broadened my mind and improved my inter-personal skills. Thus we are always told that having a law degree is an advantage because we can venture into almost anything. It will open up lots of career pathways as law graduates are highly sought after because of the skills they possess.
